Driven by the desire to make a direct, positive impact in his community, Paul Romano joined the Rocky Hill Fire Department in the Spring of 2021.
“I was drawn to the idea of being on the front lines and helping people in emergencies. It’s about more than just fighting fires; it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives, being part of a team, and embodying values like courage and teamwork. This role allows me to contribute to the greater good and find fulfillment in serving others,” said Romano.
Romano balances being a full-time college student with his volunteer duties and responds to emergency calls as his schedule permits. Through his volunteer experience, Romano has learned and enhanced skills such as leadership, dedication and time management, all of which translate to his daily life.
“It’s improved my ability to prioritize and efficiently handle my responsibilities. Seeing these skills in action among peers at the fire department has reinforced their value, showing me the positive impact they can have in various situations. This blend of personal practice and observation has been key to integrating these skills into my everyday life,” said Romano
Romano describes the brotherhood within the department as palpable, and an inherently warm and welcoming environment.
“This brotherhood extends beyond the walls of the firehouse, influencing how we operate on the field. It fosters trust, respect, and a deep sense of responsibility towards each other and the community we serve,” said Romano.
The most fulfilling part of being a volunteer for Romano is the solace of knowing that the catalyst of his and his fellow volunteers’ actions are rooted in a genuine desire to benefit the community.
