High school students can make this school year the most memorable yet by following in the footsteps of 15-year-old Aidan Rico. By joining the Rocky Hill Fire Department as a junior firefighter in November 2023, Rico has learned new skills and fire safety knowledge from the department’s adept firefighters. The Rocky Hill Fire Department hopes that Rico’s journey into the fire service will serve as the catalyst for other teenagers to join the department’s junior program by visiting www.JoinRockyHillFire.org

“Joining Rocky Hill Fire Department is a way to positively enhance Rocky Hill and preserve the tradition and family values the town was founded upon,” said Rico, adding, “I have put my value of hard work into actions that can help someone on their worst day. Having that opportunity is something everyone should experience.”

The fire department is comprised of skillful, adept locals, many of whom developed their skills and passion for firefighting during their teenage years as juniors. As a junior firefighter, Rico is tasked with learning firefighting and life skills from experienced firefighters, assisting at the scene of emergencies, conducting outreach at events and preparing for his Firefighter 1 Certification, which he will be eligible for at 18.

“Seeing the visible difference I can make in fundraising or helping out when things get stressful is impactful. Forming relationships that will last a lifetime and make me a better person is invaluable. For me, that’s the best part of volunteering,” Rico stated.

In addition to Rico’s desire to make a tangible difference in his community, he joined the fire department to make connections and learn lifelong skills.

“Our firehouse is a tight-knit family that relies on each other to better ourselves and our community. Each person in our firehouse plays a role in another’s life, whether it be a mentor, a friend, a teammate or a brother, and I treasure that,” said Rico.

Since it is a volunteer role, there is no time requirement. Volunteers are only asked to give as much as time as they are willing, as the department recognizes that they have other priorities such as school, work or extracurricular activities.

Along with being a junior firefighter, Rico is an avid freelance photographer, and graphic designer for his high school’s athletics program and a varsity wrestler. In his free time, he enjoys working out and being outdoors.

For individuals 18 and older looking for a way to form new relationships and learn new skills, the department offers volunteer firefighter and administrative volunteer roles. No prior experience is required, and training and gear are provided for free.

“There is a sense of pride that comes with joining Rocky Hill Fire Department and knowing

that you are dedicating your time towards a meaningful cause,” said Rocky Hill Fire Department Chief Todd Harris. “Joining our team is like joining a second family. Our volunteers are always there to mentor, support and encourage newcomers.”
