At just 26 years old, Abhimanyu Roperia has already worn two uniforms in service of others: one as a U.S. Army soldier and another as a volunteer firefighter with Rocky Hill Fire Department.
He joined the department in 2019, served in the Army beginning in 2022, and after completing his service earlier this year, returned home to continue volunteering in his community. “What keeps me coming back are the people. Everyone looks out for each other, and that kind of camaraderie is hard to find anywhere else,” said Roperia.
While serving as a saw gunner in the infantry and stationed solely in Hawaii, Roperia says military life strengthened skills that translate directly to the fireground.
“The Army taught me attention to detail and how to work together under pressure,” he said. “Those lessons carry over every time we respond to a call.”
He also recalls the lighter moments, like doing physical training on the beach with his platoon instead of running or going to the gym. Those experiences helped him build teamwork, discipline and composure, qualities that shape how he approaches both his personal life and every call with the Department.
Among his most memorable experiences at Rocky Hill was responding during Hurricane Ida in August 2021, when he served as a swift water rescue technician. “It was intense,” he recalled. “We were in boats getting people out of cars stuck on bridges, and even out of trees. It felt good to help people when they really needed it.”
Today, Roperia balances his volunteer duties with his career in business data analytics at Hogan Security Group. He encourages others in the community to get involved. “You should just do it,” he said. “It might feel intimidating at first, but everyone’s really friendly, and they’ll help you get started.”
The Rocky Hill Fire Department is entirely volunteer, responding to hundreds of emergency calls each year and providing training and gear at no cost to members.
“Members like Abhimanyu show that volunteering comes in many forms,” said Fire Chief Todd Harris. “His dedication and courage, both in the Army and here at home, reflect the kind of spirit that makes our department strong. We’re proud to have him on the team.”
Rocky Hill Fire Department is actively recruiting new members, including volunteer firefighters, junior firefighters and administrative volunteers. No prior experience is needed to join. To learn more or submit an inquiry, visit www.JoinRockyHillFire.org.
