From Newcomers to Lifesavers: Rocky Hill Fire Department Welcomes Three New Recruits

What does a pharmaceutical marketing specialist, full-time student and cancer researcher have in common? They are all new volunteers on their way to becoming certified members of Rocky Hill Fire Department. After joining the department in 2024, these recruits began their Fire Academy training in January 2025 as part of the Department’s push to strengthen its ranks through the support of a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funded Staffing for Adequate Fire and Rescue Services (SAFER) Grant. Their commitment to protecting the community is not only helping to fill critical roles, but is also proving to be a transformative experience.

The Rocky Hill Fire Department hopes that by sharing these stories, it will encourage others to consider the life-changing opportunity of volunteer firefighting via www.JoinRockyHillFire.org. Here are their stories:

Edward “Ed” Banfe

Montgomery Township resident Ed Banfe was inspired to volunteer after spotting a banner outside the Rocky Hill Fire Department calling for volunteers. A pharmaceutical marketing specialist balancing work between Bridgewater and home, Banfe wasn’t seeking a new hobby. However, with two sons in college and a growing sense of civic duty, he recognized the vital role volunteers play in safeguarding his community and decided to take action.

“Rocky Hill is in my backyard essentially. When I saw the banner, I thought to myself, ‘What excuse do I have for not joining?’ I scanned the QR code on the banner, submitted an inquiry form and Chief Harris reached out to me immediately to join,” he said.

Banfe officially joined the department in September 2024 and has already responded to numerous emergency calls. His part-time, work-from-home schedule gives him the flexibility to assist during the workday. After enrolling in the fire academy in January, Banfe has built upon the skills gained through training drills and emergency calls.

“It’s like going back to school, and that’s been very enjoyable for me. It’s a great group of people who share the same passion and enthusiasm for protecting their community,” he added.

Cristian “Cris” Ruedas

At just 18 years old, Cris Ruedas has already embraced the opportunity to serve his community by joining the Rocky Hill Fire Department. A full-time student at The College of New Jersey, Ruedas has always been familiar with the fire service thanks to his family’s deep ties.

“I felt the time was right to give back and help my community,” said Ruedas, who became a probationary member in September.

Ruedas’ favorite part of volunteering has been working alongside a dedicated team.

“Being around a great group of guys, all doing something they love, is the most rewarding aspect. I’m constantly learning and growing,” he added.

Since joining, Ruedas has gained valuable skills, including discipline and the importance of continuous training.

“There’s always something to learn, and the work ethic of my teammates has been inspiring,” he said.

For anyone considering volunteering, Ruedas has a simple message: “It’s a great way to give back, learn valuable skills and make lifelong friendships.

Gary Zuckerman

When Gary Zuckerman caught wind of the Rocky Hill Fire Department seeking new recruits, he didn’t need any convincing. Firefighting had long been on his mind.  Though he now works in cancer research at Meyer-Squibbs, his career as a physician brought him face-to-face with firefighters, leaving him in awe of their camaraderie and dedication. The call for volunteers reignited his long-held dream of becoming a firefighter.

“I submitted an inquiry online, and the chief called me right away with enthusiasm. Two days later, I attended training, unsure of what to expect, but the warm welcome immediately eased my nerves. From the start, I felt like part of the team, and that sense of camaraderie has only grown,” Zuckerman said.

Through the Department’s weekly training, Zuckerman has gained life-saving skills while strengthening his leadership and communication abilities, which enhance both his professional role and effectiveness as a leader.

“If you want to help people and learn new skills, this is a phenomenal way to do it,” he concluded.

Rocky Hill Fire Department is always looking for passionate individuals to join its team. No prior experience is needed to join. Training and gear are provided for free. Visit www.JoinRockyHillFire.org and take the first step today.
